But real first aid readiness begins much earlier than that - It starts with awareness.

Sometimes the greatest risk is not immediately obvious. A dusty storeroom, an unused garage, a holiday cabin standing closed for months, a farm shed are ordinary environments that most people would never associate with a serious health threat. Yet recent international concern around hantavirus has reminded the world that awareness of your surroundings is also part of protecting health and safety.

For the South African First Aid League, this is an important reminder that first aid is not only about reacting to emergencies, it is also about prevention, recognising risks early, and knowing when to seek medical help.

International health authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), have been monitoring the situation closely.

South African health authorities have urged the public not to panic, noting that there have been no recorded cases originating from local rodents on the African continent. The same principle applies to environmental health hazards.

Viruses such as hantavirus remind us that some dangers are invisible. Entering enclosed spaces contaminated by rodent activity without proper ventilation or protection may expose people to serious illness. According to the CDC (Centre for Disease Control), hantavirus infection often occurs when contaminated dust particles from rodent droppings or nesting material are disturbed and inhaled.

This is why awareness forms part of first aid readiness. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) given by a bystander before emergency services arrive can more than double the person’s chance of survival. CPR isn’t just a medical skill, it is a community skill, one that can save loved ones, neighbours, co-workers and strangers.

However, research has revealed a striking and concerning pattern: women are less likely than men to receive bystander CPR after a cardiac arrest. On International Women’s Day, it is important not only to celebrate women’s contributions but also to ensure equity in life-saving care. Understanding why this disparity exists and how we can address it is essential for building safer communities for everyone.

For example:

Researchers analysing more than 300,000 cardiac arrest cases in the U.S. found that women were about 14 % less likely than men to receive bystander CPR or defibrillation.

Earlier research also showed women in public locations were less likely than men to receive CPR, a difference not fully explained by the setting or other factors.

These differences have real consequences: when CPR isn’t given promptly, survival rates drop sharply. That means some women who could survive with early intervention may not get that chance.

This has led to initiatives like the “Womanikin,” which adapts training models to better represent female anatomy and help learners practise on all body types.

Sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t discriminate by gender, and South Africans are just as likely to witness a loved one collapse in a public space, in a shopping centre, at school, or at home.

What does differ is people’s confidence and willingness to act. In many communities, hesitation often comes from fear: fear of doing it wrong, fear of touching someone’s body, or fear of legal consequences. These fears can be heightened when the person in need is a woman. This means we may be inadvertently reducing survival chances for women simply because people aren’t confident in responding.

Many South Africans have lived through that anxious waiting period: a loved one struggling to breathe, a child injured at sport, an elderly parent collapsing at home, or a car accident on a busy road. In those moments, panic is natural. But so is the realisation that help may not arrive as quickly as we hope.

South Africa’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is under strain, and the impact is felt in everyday homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. This is exactly why basic first aid knowledge is not “nice to have” anymore. It is a practical life skill that can buy time, reduce harm, and in some cases, keep someone alive until professional help arrives.

Since 1935, the South African First Aid League has focused on equipping ordinary people with calm, practical skills for extraordinary moments. This article explains what we know (with verifiable data) about the EMS pressure, and what first aid skills can do in the gap between an emergency and an ambulance.

In other words, the system is attempting to serve millions of people with fewer vehicles than required to meet demand.

In reporting that includes comments attributed to a Department of Health spokesperson, it is stated that only 4,007 ambulances were operating across all nine provinces, against an estimated need of more than 6,000 based on population and a recommended coverage ratio.

When ambulances are limited, callouts queue up, rural distances become even harder to cover, and response times can stretch. The painful truth is that in some emergencies, the first responder may be a parent, teacher, colleague, neighbour, or passer-by.

A government technical report notes targets of reaching Priority 1 patients within 15 minutes in urban areas and within 40 minutes in rural areas.

Those targets matter because they reflect what emergency care aims to achieve. But when resources are stretched, real-world experience can look very different. That gap between “what should happen” and “what does happen” is where first aid becomes critical.

In future the courses will be referred to as Basic First Aid, Intermediate First Aid and Advanced First Aid. The certificates will also indicate the courses in this way.

Our online course remains a hit. It is especially popular with schools. The theory is done online, and we only need one day for the practical assessment. Many schools followed this option. This is a combination Basic and Intermediate course. An intermediate certificate is issued.

Our range of first aid kits has also expanded - we have a wide selection of very affordable (and pretty) kits and bags. Our standard bag is a beautiful red with a Regulation 7 content. There are also smaller bags for the car or handbag, as well as a nice big green plastic box.

As soon as schools start, and sporting events kick off early in the year, we are of course ready to assist with emergency helpers. Our prices are again very reasonable, contact us for a quote.

To all our customers, may 2024 exceed your wildest dreams.
