A Brand New Course

We are starting a brand new course in August – the first aid instructor course.

If you are in possession of an advanced first aid certificate, and want to do training, this course is for you.

Perhaps training is your forte, or perhaps like many of us you love first aid and would like to share your knowledge with others.

Your advanced first aid certificate must still be valid, and if not, you can do the course with us.

The SA First Aid League specialises in first aid training. You can do the basic, intermediate, and advanced courses all with us.

The basic course is a two-day course.

The basic and intermediate course (combination) is over three days.

The advanced course is a five-day course.

We also have an online course. The basic and intermediate course is available in online format. The theory is done online in your own time. We then need one day for the practical assessment.

This course was developed during lockdown and is very popular. It is cheaper than the three-day course and on top of that you save two days of training.

And then – our new instructor course is a five-day course. If you qualify and are interested in this, please contact Marina at marina@firstaidleague.co.za.

It's Winter Holiday

Finally, winter is here and the election is over, and we have a course that will hopefully warm everyone's heart.

From August 2024, we will once again offer the SA First Aid League instructor course. The course is over five days, and this is for people who have already done the advanced first aid course - the course applies specifically to first aid training.

It will be presented at our head office in Centurion. The first date is already in August.

The winter school holidays are around the corner, and I smell campfire and biltong in the air. May everyone who travels and braai a piece of meat over the coals somewhere in the field really enjoy it. To the hunters – remember those left at home for a piece of biltong or venison. May everyone travel safely.

To the schoolchildren – enjoy the winter holidays, on a trip or at home. We always look forward to training children in first aid. Also remember our online option which is very popular because we need only one day for the practical assessment.

First of May - Workers Day

Worker’s day South Africa which is otherwise known as May Day all over the world is a chance to commemorate the labourers of every nation, and the contributions they make towards the growth of the nation. There is a lot of history about this as labourers across the globe are appreciated, and their struggles acknowledged. Truth be told, it has not always been easy.

Easter - In which Basket do you put your eggs?

Paul says in 1 Cor. 15 verse 17 if Christ is not risen, then our faith is useless, then we are still in our sins. If Christ did not rise, then we preach a false gospel. Then we might as well eat, drink and be merry because tomorrow we die. So Paul puts all his Easter eggs in the resurrection basket.

If this did not happen, then Christianity is a fraud. We might as well forget about it and spend the rest of our lives like gluttons.

But - we believe with all our hearts that Jesus rose physically, bodily and permanently.

How wonderful is that!

Know the Emergency Number

Well, at least we survived JannieWorry month. And this year, like last year, seems to have wings and fly.

2024's big story in South Africa is certainly the election, and it will occupy our media and minds for a large part of the year.

Last night the wind blew very strongly in Pretoria, and this morning on the way to work the streets were full of branches and here and there an uprooted tree.

Just beyond the Fontaine Circle, there is an accumulation of vehicles. Slowly around the corner, we see a fire truck. At first, I suspect it is a car accident. Fortunately not, the fire truck is there to get a tree that has fallen onto the tarmac out of the way.

I see the fireman putting on special shoes, an overall, and gloves. And I think how dangerous such a job is, how easy it is for someone to crash into the fire truck, or the enormous tree that can give way. I think that certain people's job is always to clean up the accident or disaster.

And yet the biggest disaster can happen inside a house, where children are playing near water without supervision, or an elderly person who falls or has a heart attack. It is important to have the emergency number of your area handy.

The number we recommend is 087 655 1800. This number has someone on duty 24/7 at a call centre and will send the ambulance closest to the casualty to you.

And then, of course, do a first aid course yourself, so that you are equipped to handle a situation until the ambulance or doctor arrives.

Good luck for 2024

2023 will surely be remembered for the world cup we won. How wonderful it was - the excitement, the nerves, the coming together and finally winning the final. We will carry that with us for a long time.

In addition, there was the good news that first aid has been listed by the QCTO (Quality Council for Trade and Occupation), and that all first aid suppliers can apply for accreditation.

Names are changed and we are no longer talking about Level 1, 2 or 3. In future the courses will be referred to as Basic First Aid, Intermediate First Aid and Advanced First Aid. The certificates will also indicate the courses in this way.

Our online course remains a hit. It is especially popular with schools. The theory is done online, and we only need one day for the practical assessment. Many schools followed this option. This is a combination Basic and Intermediate course. An intermediate certificate is issued.

Our range of first aid kits has also expanded - we have a wide selection of very affordable (and pretty) kits and bags. Our standard bag is a beautiful red with a Regulation 7 content. There are also smaller bags for the car or handbag, as well as a nice big green plastic box.

As soon as schools start, and sporting events kick off early in the year, we are of course ready to assist with emergency helpers. Our prices are again very reasonable, contact us for a quote.

First aid as a means of exchange

Last night I watched a film that was more than two hours long.

It is a biographical war film produced by Jean-Jacques Annaud.

It is based on the story of SS Sergeant Heinrich Harrer’s memoir Seven Years in Tibet. He is a prisoner of war and escapes. The story is about his experiences between 1944 and 1951.

A young Brad Pitt plays the main role, and the music is by John Williams. There’s even music from Yo-Yo Ma.

So gentle on the eye and the ear.

The film takes place in icy mountains. With that, I could identify a little, with Gauteng seeing snow for the first time in ten years. At least I was warm and not hungry.

In dire circumstances, before the main character begins to settle down and make friends with the fourteenth Dalai Lama, who was a child at the time, the acquisition of food is the biggest challenge.

They trade anything they have for food. And there he took out a small can. It is a white can with red letters on it – First Aid Kit.

From the can he then took out his means of exchange – a battered paper with the heading Inventory and Notes for Use.

I couldn’t help but enjoy it.

That a first aid document is used as a means of exchange for food.

It was autumn and it was winter

It was evening and it was morning – according to the story of creation.

The seasons also feel a bit like that.

One day it is still hot summer. The next day I wear a sweater over my summer dress to work.

A week later, I put on a long-sleeved T-shirt under my clothes, still with sandals.

And then I wear boots, with thick stockings.

It was summer, it was autumn, and then it was winter.

Our offices in Centurion are cold early in the year. There are trees on the premises where finches nest. One big tree fell over last week.

The tree was then cut down and with it the wild ivy plants.

Unfortunately, the finches were lost in the battle. But suddenly, there is the sun. All day long. How nice!

So, here I am now sitting in my sunny office, suitcase packed, on my way to Cape Town for a wedding this weekend. But there they say it’s freezing. The SA Weather Service’s forecast on Google gives temperatures below 20 degrees all weekend. For someone from Pretoria, that is very cold.

And yet we can marvel at creation – the turning of the seasons. And we can know, in a turbulent time, that the Creator God who lets the sun shine through my office window, is also the One who holds the nations in the palm of His hand.

What a comfort.

It's a New Year

Wow! We are fast approaching February.

After a week’s break in December between Christmas and New Year, The SA First Aid League’s staff are all back at the office.

The Phase 6 load shedding only makes us more creative. We refuse to fall into a state of discouragement. We can continue our work and are grateful to customers who have supported us for years. Together we enter the New Year.

We continue to strive to deliver the best training at the best prices. Relationships with colleagues and suppliers are extremely important and working well with everyone, our goal for the year.

The SA First Aid League is registered with the Department of Labor and we also have an HWSETA number.

The year flew by

Wow, I don’t know if it’s just with the First Aid League, but this year has flown by like no other. We’re guessing it’s because the world is open post-Covid and everyone has been very busy… and aren’t we glad about that!

We said goodbye to Bettie Beytell who managed the South Gauteng branch for many years. Bettie, together with Norman Knoesen, sat beside the field for many days with sports activities and kept an eye out in case there were any injuries.

Bettie also did training and we miss her already.

Bettie, thank you for many years of dedication to the SA First Aid League. We trust your retirement is peaceful and that you find time to walk by the sea and collect shells.

We are also grateful to once again employ Eldon Dicks and Norman Knoesen for training in Gauteng.

We have already retrained old clients such as TUT, the Canadian Embassy and PlusStores’ people.

Marina Basson, who is our head of training, survived a back operation and a broken shoulder – we are grateful with her that she is mobile again.

Elizabeth is working on our new format certificates, and everyone is looking forward to the new year.

We are very aware of the great grace we receive. We consider ourselves blessed.
